Time: 19.00 – 21.00
Venue: Glasgow Sheriff Court

For 27 years the Glasgow Bar Association has been the sponsor of this impressive annual Debating Competition for school pupils in the S1-S3 age group. The competition has been in continuous existence since 1989 and is in its 30th year. Schools from Glasgow and its outlying areas are invited to participate.
This year, in the first round, 32 teams of 2 students argued for or against the motion “This house believes that overuse of social media causes damage”. Eight teams competed in the semi-finals where the motion “This house would increase investment in green energy” was debated.
Of the 32 teams which competed initially, the top 4 will meet in the final at Glasgow Sheriff Court where the motion “This house believes that unrestricted free speech is the mark of a healthy democracy” will be debated. The finalists are from the following schools: High School of Glasgow; Duncanrig Secondary; St Columba’s School; and Mearns Castle High. The winners will receive the Glasgow Bar Debating Cup for display in their school as well as individual trophies and the other finalists will receive medals to mark their successful participation in the competition.
Members of the Association, who have attended previous finals, have been consistently impressed by the talent and maturity of the young contestants.
